Lamp Cord Types Explained

SPT-1, SPT-2, rayon-covered and twisted cords compared.

SPT-1 and SPT-2

The difference is insulation thickness and current capacity. Most table lamps use SPT-1; heavier fixtures use SPT-2.

Cloth-covered cord

Rayon-wrapped cord over modern insulation gives a period look with contemporary safety.

Twisted pair

Common on early 20th-century reproductions and pendant fixtures.

Cord length and gauge

Longer runs need heavier gauge to avoid voltage drop and heat.
